Accomplished songwriter/producer turned TV personality Kara DioGuardi is shocked that she was axed from American Idol in favor of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler . According to TMZ , American Idol fired DioGuardi and is going back to three judges instead of four, with Lopez and Tyler joining Idol veteran Randy Jackson . And the only way Kara could get her spot back is if the J.Lo deal falls apart, but reports suggest that the deal is done.  

When asked about reports that Jennifer Lopez will be the new American Idol judge, her former My Family (Mi Familia) co-star and friend Jimmy Smits told OK ! he didn't know if it was true. "Is that like, a go?" he said. But Smits, who appeared at the NBC party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Friday night to promote his new legal drama, Outlaw , was happy to elaborate on why J. Lo WOULD be a good Idol judge if it's soon confirmed.

KARA DioGuardi has been FIRED from American Idol — according to a new report. TMZ says the TV talent show — which recently lost Ellen DeGeneres and is rumored to be gaining Jennifer Lopez — will be going back to a three-judge format. Assuming all deals are finalized, the website says, the judge's panel will consist of Randy Jackson , Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler .

Reports that the singer-dancer-actress' deal to join the judge's panel next season is done are premature, according to two insiders close to the show. Fox has a deal "in principle" with Lopez but she has not signed on the dotted line.  

The network said Friday that a live episode of the comedy will air Oct. 14 and will be performed twice so that both East and West Coast viewers get to see it that way. NBC executives told the Television Critics Association that "30 Rock" executive producers Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels were approached about a live episode and were up for the challenge. Fey, the show's star and creator, is familiar with live TV from her "Saturday Night Live" days.
